Job Summary:
The University of Chicago is seeking enthusiastic and motivated Summer Interns to join our diverse and dynamic technology teams. As a Summer Intern, you will have the opportunity to apply to IT specialties, such as Desktop Support, Academic Technology Solutions (ATS), Information Security, Network Infrastructure or Operations (I&O), and Communication Technology Services. This internship provides a unique chance to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies and contribute to meaningful projects that support the University’s mission of excellence in education and research.

Desktop Support
Support computer setup, inventory, and event technology across campus. -
Academic Technology Solutions (ATS)
Assist with course accessibility, instructional technology, and faculty support. -
Information Security
Support security awareness, documentation, and responsible data practices. -
Network Infrastructure or Operations (I&O)
Assist with documenting and supporting campus network and voice systems. -
Communication Technology Services – Technology Writer
Draft and update technical documentation and knowledge base materials.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Desktop Support Services:
- Assist with redesigning and organizing the Desktop Support Imaging Room for efficient computer deployment (setup stations, reroute cabling, test connectivity, label/setup, address safety/efficiency).
- Clean and organize the computer storage room, inventory assets, label devices, sort items for reuse/disposal, and stage devices based on status.
- Support inventory of Facilities-managed computers by visiting locations, collecting device details, and maintaining accurate tracking.
- Help the Executive Support team with technology setup during events: Zoom, AV equipment, connectivity checks, and provide onsite technical support.
- Develop skills in hardware setup, inventory management, technical documentation, event tech support, and team troubleshooting.
Academic Technology Solutions:
- Champion the “Aim for Accessible” Challenge: Promote and support the University’s initiative to improve course accessibility. Collaborate or assist instructors by systematically reviewing course content and fixing accessibility standards.
- Document Remediation: Perform remediation of course materials, converting files (PDFs, PowerPoints, Word docs) into accessible, screen-reader-friendly formats.
- Process Development: Test, document, and refine workflows for converting non-accessible material, helping to establish a standard operating procedure for remediation efforts.
- Quality Assurance: Review Canvas courses and other learning materials for consistency in accessibility features (color contrast, alt-text, heading structures, and captioning).
- Platform Support: Understand and provide support/troubleshooting for academic technology platforms, resolving student issues.
- Resource Creation: Assist in creating guides and documentation to support instructors understand and maintain accessibility standards.
- Needs Assessment: Collect data on common accessibility bottlenecks to help the team improve workflow.
Information Security
- Support periodic access reviews to help verify that access privileges remain generally appropriate and matched roles and responsibilities.
- Assist in the creation of educational materials, such as documentation and short instructional videos to promote security, data, and identity best practices.
- Support documentation efforts by helping organize, update, or streamline security and data-related guidance and reference materials.
- Assist with small research tasks to gather information on best practices in security, privacy, or data handling and summarize key takeaways.
- Contribute to awareness efforts by helping create or refine clear, user-friendly communications on security and responsible data practices.
- Support Awareness Campaigns: Assist in planning, promoting, and executing engaging events, workshops, and digital campaigns for Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
- Content Creation: Develop educational materials such as presentations, emails, infographics, articles, quizzes, and videos to promote cybersecurity best practices.
- Community Engagement: Partner with students, staff, and faculty to foster a security-first culture through outreach, interactive activities, and departmental collaborations.
- Behavioral Change Initiatives: Help design and roll out programs (e.g., phishing simulations, password hygiene campaigns) targeted at changing risky behaviors and reinforcing secure practices.
- Measurement & Analysis: Collect, analyze, and report on metrics related to human risk and awareness program effectiveness; assist in surveys, feedback collection, and data analysis.
- Research & Innovation: Stay informed on industry trends and emerging threats that affect user behavior; suggest new ideas for awareness efforts.
- Team Support: Attend meetings, contribute insights, and support other Information Security Team projects as needed.
Network Infrastructure and Operations
- Help in maintaining networking and voice services that connect University users.
- Help manage tools and services providing reliable and secure computing resources to the University community.
- Document network equipment and data cables on patch panels in various building IT rooms on campus and in the hospital using spreadsheets.
- Take pictures of existing conditions of IT telecommunications rooms.
- Upload spreadsheets into the ITS Plant database.
Communication Technology Services – Technical Writer
- Draft and/or edit documentation and knowledge base articles for several ITS departments
- Review documentation library for expiring or outdated material
- Suggest and draft new documentation
- Help with other writing as needed
- Strong writing and editing skills preferred: please send a technical/process writing sample if you are interested in this position
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- GPA: 2.5 +
- Currently enrolled in a certificate or degree program in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to stay focused in remote or hybrid environment.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
- Experience with web development or enterprise systems.
- Proficient with spreadsheets.
- Skilled in organizing information.
- Experienced in managing document repositories and documents.
- Capable of running metrics.
- Competent in compiling and summarizing data.
- Familiarity with cloud computing, data center operations, or collaboration tools.
- Basic familiarity with C++ and Java programming languages.
